Engaging Learners as Active Participants at School

Tue, 28 Jan 2025

Virtual, Online

How can schools engage hard-to-reach learners so that they attend school and are on time, and are motivated to learn, make progress and achieve good outcomes? This masterclass explores practical strategies for improving learner attendance and punctuality, improving learners’ social and emotional development in school, helping learners to become active participants in lessons, and fostering a sense of belonging among learners and their families.

Why do some learners absent themselves from school or turn up late? Why do some learners refuse to engage in school life or comply with their school’s expectations and routines? Why do some learners switch off from lessons and not engage in classroom activities? This one-day online course examines the causes of disengagement and offers a raft of practical solutions including:

  • How to improve the attendance of disenfranchised and disengaged learners

  • How to foster a sense of belonging so learners feel they have a part to play in school life

  • How to engage parents and families as partners in their child’s education

  • How to ensure the classroom is truly inclusive of all learners and that the curriculum reflects learners’ lived experiences, as well as takes them beyond it

  • How to motivate learners by making explicit the purpose of learning and making visible their personalised progress
