This practical training event aims to provide essential guidance and valuable information to support the effective management of site security and major incidents.
This practical course provides advice to help educational settings to become better prepared for and able to respond to terrorism and other major incidents. It sets out practical steps to keep learners and staff safe in the event of an incident through simple and cost-effective methods. The course is aimed at those working in settings who have existing responsibilities for emergency planning and response and site security and staff new to concepts of protective security and preparedness. It will help to identify security vulnerabilities, suspicious activity and respond when there is an incident.

FACILITATOR
Martyn is currently Head of Education for a large Local Authority. Having originally trained as a primary teacher, he has been privileged to teach in primary, secondary and Further Education, working as both a Secondary Headteacher and senior leader in a number of settings. He has worked in both academies and LA schools and has a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of school leadership from curriculum development through to school business operations, community engagement, sixth form and governance. Martyn worked at a large Local Authority as a senior manager in the £300m Building Schools for the Future team and project managed 10 new school builds/refurbishments. He has led the operational functions of a MAT and been recognised as an open, honest, hands on leader who is able to get back to basics and make a difference. He is passionate about creating a positive step change in the education and life chances of young people and believes collaboration, partnership and teamwork is the key to success. Away from work he is an accomplished musician and maintains sanity as a musical director for amateur dramatics and choirs. He is married with two secondary age children.

Make simple plans to improve protective security awareness and preparedness that can deter terrorists and other security threats looking for a target and help keep learners, staff and visitors safe.
Develop the role of a site Security Lead to develop and maintain policies and plans which promote a good security culture and deters someone intending to cause harm from targeting your setting.
Ensure compliance with what works best for learners and staff with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) to ensure that policies, plans and procedures are inclusive and accessible.
Understand how ‘See, Check and Notify’ (SCaN) helps identify suspicious activity and deter and detect someone intending to cause harm targeting which can be easily applied to all settings.
Support settings in creating a ‘Bomb threat checklist’ in preparedness for a live incident.
Develop the ‘RUN HIDE TELL’ principle to ensure they can immediately respond to live incidents and make adjustments Understand and develop processes for Lockdown, Invacuation and Evacuation.
Preparing and implementing a grab kit comprising of key items that can assist during an incident; this is particularly helpful for learners with SEND.
