New to Role: Designated Safeguarding Lead

This course is perfect for Designated Safeguarding Leads and Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads who want a full introduction to the role and the responsibilities it entails.

The role of the designated safeguarding lead (DSL) carries a significant level of responsibility. It is therefore vitally important that those undertaking this role and those who are deputy designated safeguarding leads (DDSL) are fully trained and remain up to date with current safeguarding issues.

This masterclass provides an essential introduction to the role of designated safeguarding lead and deputy designated safeguarding leads. It is aligned with current legislation, guidance, best practice, and the requirements of the Ofsted inspection framework.

This masterclass will enable you to:

  • Understand the purpose and importance of the designated safeguarding lead and deputies.

  • Understand the role of partner agencies and services and how to work effectively with them.

  • Awareness of professional curiosity and the importance it plays in safeguarding children.

  • Awareness of the emotional impact from the disclosure of abuse on you and colleagues.

  • Understand and explore your school’s safeguarding policy framework

  • Identifying the barriers to effective information sharing and how to overcome them.

  • Understand how personal values and beliefs can impact on safeguarding practices.

  • Understand the tools of resolution and escalation to assist in disagreement between professionals

  • Awareness of other multi-agency safeguarding arrangements e.g., MARAC and MAPPA.

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of the Local Safeguarding Children Partnership.

  • Awareness of the role and responsibilities of the designated safeguarding lead in the local reviews of serious child safeguarding cases. 

Facilitator

Lindsay has worked in the children and young people’s sector since 2002, starting in residential social work before moving to youth justice, youth work and social care.  Then  into the charity sector, progressing to running a children and young people’s mental health and well-being charity as their CEO. Lindsay remains in the charity sector part time, working as the Head of Growth, Compliance and Safeguarding for a national children’s charity leading on all safeguarding cases. Including auditing, developing training and implementation of the safeguarding and safer recruitment activities, policies and procedures. Alongside this Lindsay works as a consultant using her expertise in safeguarding, safer recruitment and/or volunteering to improve organisations at a strategic level to operational practices.   

Lindsay is also a Safeguarding honorary advisor for a national dementia charity has undertaken their safeguarding and safer recruitment audits and improvement programme.

All Lindsay’s roles have involved safeguarding policy, practice and culture, from a strategic level to direct work, in different sectors, organisation types and roles. Safeguarding has become her passion within work, and why she is now wanting to focus on working with more organisations to ensure they are the best they can be in regard to keeping children, young people and vulnerable adults (as well as the staff and volunteers who work with them) safe, secure, and able to achieve their full potential. Lindsay continues to learn and develop wherever she can, believing this is a fundamental part of her work.
