This course will help you understand and communicate effectively with parents and individuals concerned that society is drifting too far ‘left’ and ‘liberal’. Whether representing religious perspectives or more traditional, conservative ideologies many parents and UK citizens are fearful that schools are promoting concepts and beliefs which undermine traditional ‘family values’ and which will have a corrupting influence on their children and society. Specifically, many concerns revolve around debates concerning gender identity, sexuality and liberal views on sex.
At the same time these issues have become increasingly politicised and are being weaponised in political debates, with much misunderstanding and bullying ensuing. In faith schools, which explicitly aim to uphold the values of their faith, there is a growing tension developing in how to navigate these issues.
This masterclass will address four big questions:
Why has ‘gender politics’ suddenly become such a big thing and what are the moral, theological and social concerns?
What should we be teaching our children about these issues – our legal and moral duties?
How can we respond effectively to students (and their parents) who challenge traditional norms regarding gender and sexuality?
How can we fulfil our duty as educators without angering or ostracising parents who have genuine concerns or who seek to challenge the school’s approach.
