The course also emphasises the importance of regular check-ins and continuous feedback, providing strategies for maintaining communication and addressing challenging performance issues. Additionally, it offers insight into teacher responsibilities and standards, ensuring alignment with Department for Education policies and the latest appraisal guidance. Finally, you will review key points, avoid common pitfalls, and develop strategies for ongoing improvement.

FACILITATOR
Malcolm is an executive leadership consultant who works with the National Institute of Teaching and Teach First, designing leadership courses, supporting school improvement and delivering National Professional Qualifications.

He has been a Headteacher, Executive Headteacher and National Leader of Education, typically working with schools in disadvantaged communities.

KEY LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Participants will learn the importance of effective appraisals, how to build trust and rapport with their team, and identify the key elements that make appraisal conversations successful.

  • Participants will be able to align personal targets with school-wide goals, set SMART goals, and use data effectively to measure and track performance.

  • Participants will understand the importance of continuous feedback throughout the year, develop strategies for maintaining regular check-ins, and learn how to handle challenging conversations about performance.

  • Participants will gain an overview of teacher responsibilities and standards, differentiate between professional standards and personalised targets, and ensure alignment with the Department for Education and school-specific policies.

  • Participants will identify key pitfalls to avoid in appraisals, recap the key points covered in the session, develop strategies for further improving their appraisal skills, and explore opportunities for ongoing practice and development.
