Getting the Best from Boys in English

Mon, 10 Nov 2025

Virtual, Online

This course aims to equip teachers with the knowledge and skills to improve outcomes for boys in English Language and English Literature.

For years, boys have been underperforming in relation to girls in the subject of English. Popular beliefs about why this may be included: the perception that English is ‘for girls’; the abandonment of coursework-based assessment; too many female teachers; boys’ inability to connect with the emotions good literature relies upon.

In this course, Matt Pinkett deconstructs common myths about Boys and English, offers suggestions as to how teachers can improve boys’ reading and writing skills, and explains how we can make English more appealing for those boys for whom English isn’t a passion.
